Middleton Community Nature Garden
Middleton Community Nature Garden is a peaceful, wildlife-rich green space owned and managed by Broughton and Milton Keynes Parish Council.
Formerly an allotment site, the garden has been transformed through tree planting, wildflower areas, woodland copses, informal walking routes and places to sit and enjoy nature. It is open for residents to explore throughout the year.
The Parish Council is now working with residents and partner organisations on the garden’s next stage of development, with a focus on biodiversity, accessibility and creating a welcoming natural space for the community.
Planning the project
Vision for the future: To create a peaceful outdoor space that provides rich biodiversity and a relaxing area for local residents to walk, sit, and enjoy the scenery and wildlife.

Background: The Nature Garden is nestled in a quiet corner of Middleton, surrounded by beautiful countryside and just a stone’s throw from historic Milton Keynes Village. The site is enclosed by native hedging and includes areas of meadow, longer grass and native trees, with access through two wooden gates. The surrounding land has been developed by The Parks Trust as a wood meadow, helping to increase the variety and abundance of local wildlife.
Alongside the Nature Garden is a secluded orchard. The former horse paddock at the front of the site has been transformed into a dedicated dog exercise paddock, developed by the Parish Council in partnership with The Parks Trust. It has proved to be a very popular and well-used community facility.
The site is within easy walking distance of Middleton, Milton Keynes Village and Oakgrove. Please note that there is no dedicated parking available.
The story so far.......
2020–2021: Site assessments completed and formal consent obtained for the change of use.
2021–2022: Tree avenue established and further native trees planted.
November 2022: More than 400 trees planted by Community Trees MK and local volunteers, creating two woodland copses.
Spring 2023: The first wildflower meadow was established.
Summer 2024: Access was improved and the entrance gates were permanently opened.
January 2025: A new interpretation board was installed.
Summer 2026: A community working group was formed to develop the garden’s next phase.
Autumn 2026 - A Middleton Nature Garden Working Group has been established to help shape the future of the site.
Current priorities include:
- improving and widening the walking paths;
- managing the boundary hedges;
- maintaining the woodland copses and replacing unsuccessful trees;
- creating quieter, shaded seating areas;
- reviewing the wildflower meadow and its ongoing maintenance;
- considering opening the garden more fully towards the adjoining orchard; and
- planning additional woodland planting, including native bulbs and plug plants.
These improvements will be developed gradually, with the first phase focusing on essential maintenance and preparing the site for longer-term enhancements.

Wood Meadow Habitat
A wood meadow is a special habitat that allows wildlife to access and pollinate meadow wildflowers, whilst being able to have a pockets of dense wooded area nearby to find quick refuge. The Parks Trust are in the process of completing a large woodmeadow transformation that will surround our community garden, and allow our garden to be part of a much larger wildlife rich area.
Peace Commemoration display across the Parish
The Parish Council have now planted 18 trees across the Parish as an act of remembrance.
Why 18? The number 18 signifies the number of conflicts the UK has been involved in from WW1 up until present time.
These trees have also formed part of the tree avenue at the Middleton Allotment, and the others will be planted across the parish.
FAQs
Who will maintain the site?
This site is owned and managed by The Parish Council and our officers will be regularly checking the site. Our landscape contractors will continue to maintain the site including looking after the meadows, shrubs and trees.
What type of trees will be planted?
All the trees will be medium sized and native, and will provide seasonal interest
Will dogs be allowed on site?
Dogs will be allowed on site but should be kept under control, on a lead and should not trample on the meadow areas.
Will there be a picnic area or benches?
Benches will be provided for people to sit and relax whilst enjoying the scenery. Picnic benches and tables will not be provided, but visitors are welcome to picnic on site if they wish. Bins will not be provided, so all visitors MUST take their litter home with them as it can be harmful to the surrounding environment and wildlife.
What is happening to the area surrounding the site?
The surrounding area is managed by The Parks Trust and will remain as a greenspace with a 'wood meadow' habitat
